When her parents split, Marcie is dragged from Idaho to a family summerhouse in New Hampshire. She leaves behind her friends, a group of freaks and geeks called the Leftovers, including her emo-rocker boyfriend, and her father.
By the time Labor Day rolls around, Marcie suspects this “vacation” has become permanent. She starts at a new school where a cute boy brings her breakfast and a new romance heats up. But understanding love, especially when you’ve watched your parents’ affections end, is elusive. What does it feel like, really? can you even know it until you’ve lost it?
Cute! So cute! I absolutely loved this book. I loved Marcie and Linus. I even liked JD. They were all written well. Marcie is dealing with a lot and she makes some stupid decisions, but it never kept me from liking. That’s when I know it’s a good character. I have to be able to connect with them, even when they’re doing not-so-great things. Linus was just the sweetest thing. I couldn’t love him more. JD was nice. He was different for Marcie and there were things I didn’t exactly love about him. For the most part, I though he was a nice guy, though.
The whole book is written in verse. That makes it a really quick read. I read it in a few hours during commercial breaks and halftime during a football game. It’s also cool because the poems are supposed to be Marcie’s. She loves to write poetry and she records it all in a journal, which I suppose the book is supposed to be. It’s very cool. I’ve never read a book in verse. I listened to Ellen Hopkins’s books on audio so I never got to experience the verse. I actually really like it.
I’m not quite sure what else to say about this book. It’s just very well done. The plot is laid out well. The characters are great. The writing is good. It’s super cute. I definitely recommend picking this one up if you want an adorable, quick read.
